"Remove stuck paper from plastic sheet"

An ongoing give-and-take outset back in 2001 ...

2001

Q. Hi,

I have several sheets of acrylic still with the newspaper roofing on. The sheets are approximately 16 years old and never used. I cannot go the paper off as it appears to be stuck on solid. Information technology has been stored in a barn, no direct sun, simply mayhap just the heat of the summer year after twelvemonth caused this. I have tried soaking in water, scraping with plastic egg lifter and the mucilage is notwithstanding there.

Is there a solvent or equivalent that can be used that volition not deject or harm the acrylic?

2001

A. Pat,

Before fifty-fifty reading about the 'age' of your acrylic sheets, I said to myself, I bet that those are former sheets!

Mayhap suppliers of acrylics could help you lot. Johnson Industrial Plastics, Cadillac Plastics, Crystal Drinking glass and Plastics.

Why don't y'all endeavor some alcohol. ... not the drinkable type, too expensive! but Methyl Hydrate or any other aliphatic solvent. This should, I think, soften up the dried-on mucilage/glue underface ... simply because the square footage involved, maybe I'd effort to prevent it from evaporating likewise fast ... it is water miscible, after all!

Cheers!

A. Pat,

I happened to pass an Acrylic supplier this morning then I popped in and 'asked' your question.

The reply was pretty negative. Bit those sheets equally if 'you' try to soften up the sheets and 'scour' off the paper, you could become stress cracks. Maybe, perchance, soak the entire sail for some time in water (not a bad idea!)But I did point out that your sheets had NOT been outdoors which is probably a blessing.

They also asked if those sheets were extruded or pressed. Dinna ken, I replied. Probably extruded due to their cost but and so extruded sail can stress crack more easily than the pressed sheet.

Just do NOT use Zylene or Toluene, Toluol or any of those aromatic hydrocarbons. Don't even apply polar solvents like Acetone [affil. link to info/production on Amazon]. They volition ALL attack acrylics fairly fiercely. Anyhow, Acetone is ofttimes used for edge joining but information technology is non a particularly good agglutinative compared to proprietary acrylic cements.

(I'd become for the idea of soaking the unabridged canvass in h2o. Maybe TSP (trisodium phosphate [affil. link to info/production on Amazon]) would help every bit it is a superlative wetting agent) Lots of luck!

A. Many of these sheets used an agglutinative that is heat activated. You tin can endeavor using an electric hair dryer to warm the corner of the sheet and see if this loosens the paper. If it does, slowly piece of work your fashion across the sheet--if y'all get too fast the paper will rip making removal more hard.

If that does non work, sometimes allowing a lite oil, such as vegetable oil, to soak in overnight will loosen the sheets.

Adept luck.

A. The best fashion of getting off newspaper on old Perspex, I have found subsequently 30 years of experience, is to brush a thin coat of eucalyptus oil.
on the paper and go out it for 15 minutes, than the paper scrapes off easily with a piece of wood, and the final make clean up is also easily washed with a fabric with some eucalyptus oil, it leaves no residuum and is dry out subsequently 1/2 hour,
I take just cleaned up some 20 mm sheet that was twenty years old no trouble at all. Whatsoever you lot do, never use any sort of alcohol.

A. Hi Vincent,

Why don't you go to a 'supplier' and enquire them? Surely there are LOTS of suppliers of acrylic sheets. Try Cadillac Plastics, for instance.

Peradventure, highly possibly, your sheets are OLD. Because when we used to use acrylics, the paper came off easily.

A. Ohhkay, ohhkay. I'k sure that Vincent's problem is that the darned paper won't peel off, due to some interaction with the plexiglass. Perchance a prankster stuck information technology dorsum with crazy gum, or peradventure the plastic is just years onetime. Merely, since the answer to his problem isn't duct tape, what else could it perhaps be but to spray information technology with WD-40 [affil. link to info/production on Amazon]? As far as I know, there is no 3rd universal fixit.

A. We accept a skilful sized green house with a domicile made curved roof covered in various types of acrylic and polycarbonate clear canvass material. About every five years 1 or two age out or crack and nosotros are constantly replacing the cleaved ones. The glazing guys leave their scraps and left overs behind and accept built up quite a collection of old plastic sheet material stored in the barn or under a clamber space. Finally decided to apply some of the left overs as replacements and found it very ho-hum trying to remove five- twenty year old paper covers (will remove them right abroad from now on) Later reviewing the suggestions on this site I did an experiment on a ten yr old three'x4' bit of newspaper entombed clear polycarbonate. Used Brake Fluid, WD-twoscore, Mineral oil, Turpenoid, Fast Orangish and Goo Gone [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] .
Scraped abroad on parts of each right away then left them all covered with contractor bags overnight.
The Goo Gone was by far the easiest on both attempts followed by WD- 40, the mineral oil was OK but tedious working and clean-up, the turpenoid not only did little to simplify the work but it left craze marks the adjacent day and the Fast Orange, while groovy for clean-upwardly did nothing. thumbs up sign  I just wanted to express my thanks to all the commenters hither who offered helpful tips for removing stuck paper bankroll from plexiglas sheets. I had this same problem on an old slice of plexiglas which I had already worked considerably, but and then had difficulty removing the paper considering of its age. I used the turpentine method suggested higher up, mainly considering I had some on manus and didn't accept to chase effectually town for more than exotic products. This method worked quite well, softening the agglutinative sufficiently to make removal of the paper much easier. I used a short piece of 2x4 with i finish cut at an bending every bit the scraper. This helped to remove the paper without leaving serious scrapes and scratches.

1 further tip I will add together is that whatever modest blemishes in the plastic were produced by the scraper I was able to remove hands by using an automotive production for polishing headlight plastic. Buffing the plexiglas using this product removed scuff marks and returned the surface to a similar-new appearance. For those interested, the production I used was "BlueMagic" Headlight Lens Restorer, which is widely available at automotive supply stores.

A. The best thing is to use is WD-xl; you allow it soak overnight or 2 nights then yous take a piece of plastic on the plastic and scrape it off because plastic will not scratch plastic. It will slowly kickoff to come up off and then accept paper towels and go on wiping the gum till y'all become it all off and so apply more WD-40. The best and the fastest matter to soak all the newspaper with WD-40 you're probably going to demand a little bit of information technology and then I would go to the store and purchase a a canteen of it not a spray bottle meliorate to just purchase it by the gallon you're not going to utilize that much but it has a lot of uses.
