Uber Car Involved in Fatal Crash Had Braking System Disabled

The Uber self-driving motorcar that killed an Arizona woman in March actually detected her presence half-dozen seconds earlier the fatal collision, merely failed to stop considering the automatic braking systems onboard were turned off, according to a preliminary report from investigators.

The crash killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she was crossing a street in Tempe, Arizona, with her bicycle.

The only problem? Uber had disabled the car's automatic emergency braking maneuvers "to reduce the potential for erratic vehicle beliefs," the NTSB's report said.

Supposedly, the human test driver backside the wheel would've intervened and pulled the car away. Simply the software onboard wasn't designed to alert the commuter of the impending crash either, the NTSB said.

The car possessed some other safeguard that could've helped avert the accident. According to the NTSB, the vehicle came with a standoff avoidance system from its manufacturer, Volvo, just it too was turned off at the fourth dimension of crash. Although the preliminary written report doesn't assign blame for the fatal collision, it does raise questions over why Uber's cocky-driving organisation had neglected to actuate the automated braking systems onboard.

Uber told PCMag that it'southward been working closely with the NTSB in probing the crash. The company hired a former NTSB official to suggest the company on safety equally it embarks on a review of its self-driving car program. However, Uber declined to offer more comment.
